Episode 30: What Should You Include On Your About Page for Your Business Website?
In this episode of the Business Website Blueprint podcast, I’m sharing what you should include on your website about page.
Are you struggling to actually keep people on your website?
I’m not talking about actually getting people to go visit your website, which we talked about in Episode 3 – 6 Ways to Generate More Traffic to Your Website. If you need help actually getting people to go to your website, go check that out here.
In this episode of the Business Website Blueprint Podcast, I’m talking about how to actually get the people who come to your website to stay on your website, learn from you, soak up all of your information, and actually purchase your products and services.
Quick Disclosure: This blog post contains affiliate links, which means when you click the link to purchase something on this page, it won’t cost you more but I may receive a commission for sharing it with you. Which is great, because I was going to share it with you anyway!
The first way to keep your website visitors on your website for longer is to make the purpose of your website really clear.
When somebody comes on your website, they should understand what your business is about in the first two to three seconds of landing on your website.
They should not have to scroll a ton to learn more about what you do. If there’s too many things that you do and it’s really confusing, they’re not going to know where to go, and they’re just going to hop right off and go look at Pinterest or Google to find someone who only offers what they’re looking for.
You want the purpose of your website to be very clear as soon as someone lands on your page.
When you go to a website, the first section that you see when you land on that website is called “above the fold.” It’s similar to the front page of a newspaper – it’s the first thing you see. It’s got the biggest title and it’s got a small amount of information to make you want to keep reading that newspaper. This is what you want your website to do as well. It should have a juicy title that’s going to get people in there and so they know exactly what you offer.
This brings me to the second way that you can keep website visitors on your website, and that’s to make your website skimmable.
When somebody comes on your website, they should be able to quickly find the information they’re looking for. If they have to read through eight paragraphs to learn about what you do, you probably lost them before they were even done with the first paragraph.
If you can break down what you what you offer into bullet points that are a sentence or two long, that makes it really easy for people to read, see what you offer, learn more about you, and make the choice of whether to invest in your products and services or not. I always say that you want to make your website skimmable, not skippable. A skimmable website means that visitors can easily read through the information and figure out what they need to know.
The third way to keep website visitors on your website is to keep your design simple.
Just like you want to keep the actual written content on your website simple, you want to keep the design simple as well. If you’ve got too many fonts going on, a bazillion colors, and a bunch of different design elements, that makes it harder for people to read the text and focus on what they’re reading. An overwhelming design is going to repel your website visitors.
My recommendations? I recommend a maximum of two-three fonts. For colors, your best bet is to keep it at five or less, not including black and white. As far as design elements, you want to keep it simple. You don’t need anything super sophisticated.
When your website visitors are reading through your site, they’re going to be focusing on the products and services you offer, which can be showcased in your photos. They’ll also be focused on your written content. You don’t need a whole lot going on in the background outside of those things.
