So What is the biggest mistake I see people make on their website?

The biggest mistake that people make on their website is that their website copy is all about THEM. They often use the language of, “This worked for me, so it can work for you, too.” If your messaging on your website sounds anything like that, you’re losing clients and customers.

So what should you do instead?

It’s important to make sure that your website copy is totally focused on your ideal client or customer. It should paint them as the hero of their own story.

Your product or service can guide them in their journey, but they are still the hero and the focus of the story.

If you’re a product-based business, you should still be framing your product as a tool to help your customers – whether that’s a tool to help them to enjoy their life more, or maybe it’s just something for them to enjoy and feel good about themselves when they’re wearing or using it.

If you’re a service provider, your website also needs to be focused on your ideal client, not what you can do. It’s about what your services are going to help them do.

If you’re not already familiar with the book, Building a Story Brand by Donald Miller, I highly recommend it. In his book, Donald teaches that we need to reframe our copy and make sure that it’s portraying the client or customer as the hero, and our products and services as the guide, helping them get to their goals.

Remember, you are the guide and your clients and customers are the hero of their own story. Don’t make this big mistake. Make sure that your website copy is very geared towards how your client can reach their goals with your product or service and how they can use it as a tool to make the change or improvement in their own life.
