Episode 13: What is a Website Host and Why Do You Need One for Your Business Website?

If you don’t have a website for your business yet but you’re looking to build one, you’re probably wondering what all you need for your website. In this episode of the Business Website Blueprint Podcast, I’m going to break down what a website host actually is and why you need one for your business website.

Quick Disclosure: This blog post contains affiliate links, which means when you click the link to purchase something on this page, it won’t cost you more but I may receive a commission for sharing it with you. Which is great, because I was going to share it with you anyway!

What is a Website Host?

I like to use the analogy of a house, just because it’s a little bit easier to understand what all of the technical pieces of your website actually are.

When you think of a house, your website host is the foundation of your house. You can’t build the walls of your house without getting the foundation in place first, and you definitely can’t design your beautiful rooms without that foundation holding up the walls of the house.

Your host is the platform that houses all of the code for your site. There are hundreds of different host options and they vary in their capabilities as well as their pricing and all of that.

What Should You Look for in a Website Host?

There are a few things you want to make sure your website host has included in their service:

  1. Quality Customer Service: I recommend finding a website host that has really good customer service. You want a website host that will help you if your site goes down or if you have any other technical issues. Good website hosts will offer free customer service since you’re already paying them to host.
  2. Pricing: There are a lot of hosting companies that, in my opinion, charge way too much. You really don’t need to pay an arm and a leg for your website hosting company.

Which Website Host Should You Use?

I highly recommend Bluehost or HostGator. Either are great for your business website. Their customer service is usually top notch, and they also offer amazing pricing options.  The more months you purchase of hosting up front, the cheaper the cost is per month. You could end up with a package that costs as little as $4 a month!
