Choosing Your Brand Colors

Choosing your brand colors is such an exciting part of the branding process, but how do you go about choosing the right colors? It’s more than just picking your favorite colors. There are some important things to consider and steps to take before you finalize your brand colors.

Choosing Your Brand Colors

Your Ideal Client

Before you choose your brand colors, you need to think about who your Ideal Client is. Just because a certain set of colors attracts you, doesn’t mean it’s going to attract your ideal clients. For example, if you’re drawn to rose and lavender shades but your ideal client is a male, that’s probably not a good choice.

Also consider how you want your Ideal Client to feel when they connect with your brand? Do you want to create a sophisticated, high-end feel for your clients? Then soft, muted tones are the way to go. Do you want your brand to represent fun, energy, and vibrance? Then you can go with brighter, more vibrant colors!

Inspiration board

It can be really helpful to create an inspiration board, or mood board, which reflects the look and feel of your brand and business. Pinterest is your best friend when it comes to building this. I have my clients create a shared Pinterest board made up of patterns, textures, design elements, fonts, and images that capture the aesthetic of the brand you want to create. The inspiration board serves as an overall design direction and will help us stay on track.

Choosing Colors

Once your inspiration board is created we can begin to choose the right colors for your brand. Your inspiration board should be full of images with a consistent look and feel, so we’ll use this to build our brand colors. You can save an image from your board, then upload the image to a free software like https://coolors.co/ and they will pull color codes from the image for you.

A good rule of thumb is to have no more than 6 brand colors. You should consider:

Determine Your Color Usage

Once you’ve chosen your brand colors, it’s also important to determine how and where each color will be used.

For example, I would pick one color for headings, one color for most body-text, one color for links/buttons, etc. This will create consistency and subconsciously tells your Ideal Client what they need to do when they see that color.

Now that you went through the steps to choose your brand colors, it’s time to implement them across all platforms. Your website should match your social media, business cards, packaging, etc. This will help your brand look more cohesive and easily recognizable, so that your Ideal Clients will always know it’s you when they see that color palette!
