Episode 24: WordPress Versus Squarespace – Why I Recommend One Over the Other

In this episode of the Business Website Blueprint Podcast, I’m going to break down the differences between WordPress and Squarespace, and why I recommend one over the other.

The Website Platform I Don't Recommend: Squarespace

Squarespace is a website platform, which is something you need when you’re building a website. It’s slightly simpler to use and set up than WordPress, but it’s definitely still challenging if it’s your first time.

Squarespace does offer website templates that you can customize to your business, but there is still a big learning curve with Squarespace, and it’s not as simple as everybody claims it to be. There’s still quite a bit of settings you have to figure out, so it’s really not as easy as everybody makes it out to be.

Another thing to consider with Squarespace is that you’re limited in the capabilities that you have with it. So, as your business grows, you might end up realizing that your Squarespace website can’t do everything that you want it to do. You may end up having to switch to a new website platform, which is really time consuming, and your website will be down for a period of time while you’re switching.

The Website Platform I DO Recommend: WordPress

WordPress is another website platform with tons of capabilities. Some of the benefits of WordPress are:

  1. It’s better for SEO (check out the 5 Simple SEO Strategies to Implement on Your Business Website if you need help with your SEO). SEO is how you get found organically by people searching the internet for keywords related to your business.
  2. A WordPress website is also much more customizable to what your business needs. For example, if you’re selling products and you need to have a bunch of different options that your customers can choose for a specific product, you can do that with WordPress.
  3. You can host courses on WordPress.
  4. Just like Squarespace, WordPress offers website templates that you can customize for your business website, so you don’t have to design from scratch if you don’t want to. You can check out my website templates here.
  5. With WordPress, you’re never going to outgrow your website. It will grow with your business, and it will have all the capabilities that your business needs.
  6. WordPress is actually cheaper than Squarespace!
    WordPress.org is free, but it does require a hosting company (I recommend Bluehost or HostGator). If you get a longer-term plan, it ends up coming out to like $3-$5/month, versus Squarespace, whose basic plan starts at $23/month. Paying less for WordPress for more capabilities? Sounds like a win-win!
